PHILCO MODEL 45 C
The "BUTTERFLY"
Broadcast and Shortwave Compact Tabletop Tube Radio
The Philco Model 45 C first
offered for sale in June of 1934. It has been nick named the Butterfly Radio
because of the unique grille cutout shape which resembles the shape of a
butterfly. It has a 6 tube 65 watt
Superheterodyne chassis. The Model 45 covers the standard broadcast band from
540- 1720 kc. and a short wave band from 4.2 - 13 mc. This is an AC
powered radio and has a pentode output tube for extra power, tone control,
electro-dynamic speaker and illuminated station dial.
Tube complement as follows
: 6A7 (Detector /Oscillator), 39/44 (1st I.F.), 39/44 (2nd
I.F.), 75 (2nd
detector), 42 (audio output) and 80 (rectifier).
About the Cabinet .
The
wood cabinet has been stripped, lightly sanded, dark areas were them given a
coat of aniline dark walnut water stain (same as when it was made), grain has been sealed, toner lacquered and
then given a minimum
of 8 coats of clear lacquer. Finally it is sanded with 600/800 grit sand paper and
then hand rubbed to a satin luster with several pumice compounds. Grille cloths
are a new close match replica replacement. The Escutcheon
and Knobs are original and in good condition. Felt washers have been installed
behind the knobs to help prevent scratching the finish. New rubber feet
have been installed on the bottom. The back is not present as with most of
these.
The radio
measures 16" long, 8" deep, and stands
9 1/2" tall.
About the Radio
The electronics have
been thoroughly gone through. Tubes, resistors replaced as needed, all filter, bypass and
coupling capacitors have been replaced, bakelite capacitor blocks have
been internally refitted with new capacitors to help preserve the original
appearance, new cloth covered replica power cord, tuner has been cleaned and lubricated. Volume control
and band switch have also been cleaned. Dial scale is clean and clearly legible
with no fading. This radio has been aligned for
maximum sensitivity and receives many stations on both bands with a short length of wire. A longer wire antenna could be
used if you prefer greater distance of reception. Speaker has been re-coned and
has very good sound quality. All 4 original tube shields are present.
This radio will be securely packaged to
insure it will be received in the same condition it was sent.
